My Stepbrother Is a Demon novel · Chapter 19 of 32
Chapter 19: Swarm
I grabbed the iron rod off my nightstand and the handheld fogger off my dresser.
I'd filled it from the gallon jug that afternoon, just in case.
Ivo was already on the stairs, taking them four at a time.
I was right behind him in a T-shirt and bare feet.
The west wing hall was moving.
Pests poured along the ceiling in one direction, toward my mother's door.
Ivo went through them with his bare hands.
I swung from the hips the way he'd taught me.
Pop.
Pop.
Pop.
The door to Mom's room was open.
Augustin was already inside.
He stood in front of the big canopy bed with his arms spread wide, and his face wasn't his face anymore.
Horns, black and curved.
Eyes like coals.
Every pest that came at the bed hit him first.
He tore them off the air and threw them, and they burst against the wallpaper.
Behind him, my mother was on her knees in the middle of the bed in a silk nightgown, holding a pillow.
She couldn't see anything.
She could only see her husband, horned and terrible, fighting the empty air.
