Chapter 20: Maybe
Ivo had always run hot.
By morning he was cold.
He lay in his own bed under the gray sheets, and when I touched his forehead it felt like a window in January.
The black had climbed past his elbow in the night.
Thin dark lines branched out from it under his skin.
Augustin sat at the foot of the bed in yesterday's clothes.
He'd been there since three.
Mom brought coffee and set it next to him and he didn't touch it.
She sat on the arm of his chair and put her hand on the back of his neck.
He leaned his head against her side, just a little.
It was the first time I'd seen him lean on anyone.
"Tell me what it is," I said.
Augustin looked at the black lines.
"The sting isn't poison. Not really. It's the debt. A little piece of the paper, put into him. It's eating him the way it would eat you."
"Because he took it for me."
"Yes."
"What stops it?"
He didn't answer.
"Augustin."
"I'm thinking, Ramona. Give me an hour."
I sat on the edge of the bed.
Ivo's eyes opened.
