Chapter 11: Fire Escape

Myles didn't touch them.

He looked at the keys and the badge on his white tablecloth.

"Roarke," he said. "Sit down."

"You told me to go, Dad. I'm going."

"That's not what I..."

"It's what you said."

My mother reached for Myles's hand and held on.

Roarke turned and walked out of the dining room, and after a second I followed him.

I packed in five minutes.

I've always been able to pack in five minutes.

I took two duffels, my tool roll and my laptop.

The rest of my life was still in boxes in Myles's garage from the move, and I left it there.

Roarke threw a gym bag and a suit bag in the back of the green truck and opened my door for me without a word.

Nobody came out of the house to stop us.

We were on the Edens before either of us spoke.

"Where am I taking you?" he said.

"Wabash. Mags has a couch."

"Does Mags have two couches?"

"Mags has one couch and opinions."

Mags opened her door in a bowling shirt that said LUCKY STRIKES and a face mask.

She looked at me with my two duffels.

Then she looked at Roarke behind me, holding a suit bag and filling her entire doorway.

"Oh, absolutely not," she said. "The thief guy?"

"He apologized," I said.

"I heard. On a lawn. Very classy." She pointed her finger at his chest. "The Wi-Fi password here is ImSorryHollyn, all one word, capital I, capital S, capital H. You type it every time."

Roarke looked down at her.

"That's fair," he said.

She blinked.

"Huh," she said, and stepped back to let us in.

Her apartment was one room and a kitchen over the shop, with a fire escape off the back window.

There was an engraved brass plate on every possible surface.
