Chapter 20: Hollyhock
I read it three times.
Then I held the phone out to Roarke, and he read it once and sat up.
"Searcy," he said. "With what money?"
We both knew.
Four million dollars had gone out of his father's company into an account with my name on it.
Sixty thousand of it was about to buy my shop.
Mags opened her door at 12:50 in a kimono and her green cement face mask.
She looked at my cardigan buttoned wrong and Roarke's T-shirt on backward, and she didn't say one word about it.
She just turned on the kitchen light and put the kettle on.
"He called me crying," she said. "The old man. He doesn't cry. He cried about the Cubs once, in 2016, and that was happy crying."
"Did he say who brought it?"
"Some lawyer in a nice suit. Not the chain guy. Different nice suit." She set three mugs on the counter. "Sixty thousand cash. They wired ten thousand into escrow today to show they're serious. Rest on Friday, keys on Friday, bench and tools and name on the door on Friday."
