Chapter 25: Rehearsal

"This table," Mags said, "seats four. I want that on the record."

There were five of us around it on Thursday night.

Mags had the stool. The old man had the only real chair, because he'd said so.

Myles sat on an upturned milk crate in his sport coat.

Roarke stood, because there was nothing left to sit on.

I sat on the counter by the stove with a legal pad on my knee.

There was a pot of Mags's chili between us and a stack of paper bowls.

"Again," I said. "From the top."

Myles cleared his throat.

"Dinner's at seven. Salad, chicken, nobody eats the chicken. At eight I go to the podium. I thank everybody for seventy-five years. Lonnie comes up. The notary comes up. I sign."

"And you smile," I said.

"I smile."

"Show me."

He smiled.

Mags and the old man both winced at the same time.

"That's a man being sued," the old man said.

"That's a man passing a kidney stone," Mags said.

Roarke put his hand over his eyes.

"Think about the new wing," I said. "The ribbon."

Myles looked at the chili for a second.
