Chapter 27: The Gala

Mags closed the book for me.

She put the rubber band back on it.

"Okay," she said. "Okay. We're bringing that to a party."

The club ballroom had a dance floor of pale wood and windows that went all the way up, full of the lake going dark.

There were thirty round tables with white cloths.

Each one had a centerpiece of white roses in a galvanized bucket, because Myles had insisted on buckets.

At five o'clock I came in through the kitchen behind Mags, in black, with my hair under a cap.

I had a box of brass hammers in my arms.

The security guard at the service door really was about twelve.

He checked Mags's name on his clipboard and looked at me for half a second.

"Assistant," Mags said.

"Cool," he said.

By seven, there were three hundred people in the room.

I stood in the kitchen doorway with a tray of water glasses nobody needed, behind a half-open swinging door.

I could see everything.

My mother at the head table in blue silk, beside Lonnie.

She'd done her makeup perfectly. Her diamond band was very still on her hand.
