Chapter 32: Visiting Day
I sat at my bench with the visitor form under my lamp until the streetlight came on outside.
Then I signed the blank line with my left hand.
The letters leaned back, hard, the way they always had.
It was the first thing I'd ever signed for her in my own name.
Roarke drove me up on Saturday morning.
Past the strip mall with the pawn shop. Past the turn to the cottage.
The Lake County jail was a tan building downtown with narrow windows and a flagpole.
He parked across the street and turned off the engine.
"I'll come in," he said.
"No."
"I'll sit in the lobby."
"You'll sit in the truck." I unbuckled. "If I come out fast, start the engine. If I come out slow, don't say anything."
"And if you don't come out?"
"Then they've arrested me, and you call Mags."
He almost smiled.
He took my left hand and kissed the scar on my thumb, once, and let go.
"Ten a.m.," he said. "I'll be right here."
The visiting room had six round tables bolted to the floor and a guard at a high desk.
