Chapter 24: Day Thirty
Laurent's heart was still pounding under my cheek.
"You didn't answer us," he said.
"I know."
"That's fine," Andre said. "We just wanted it said before the month ran out."
"The month runs out at midnight tonight," I said. "I've got all day."
Andre laughed into my hair.
Laurent didn't laugh, but his arms tightened around me on the felt.
At nine that morning I mailed an application to Southern Miss from the post office on Pass Road.
At noon I dealt blackjack at my old table and laughed at a drunk dentist's joke.

At five I walked into Necaise Bail Bonds under the red sign.
The waiting room was full.
A young woman sat by the window with a sleeping baby, waiting on her boyfriend's bond.
Two men in work boots were arguing quietly about who would call whose mother.
My mother sat by the counter in her chair, in her blue housecoat, with her pink nails done fresh.
