Chapter 15: Nels's POV: Forty Miles
Nels's POV
I did not sleep that night either.
I lay on my back on my side of the line and tasted her.
That was for the pastor, she had said, and I'd said I know, because it was true.
She had put her hands in my hair and pulled me down, and I had known what that was.
She was a woman in a corner who would use whatever she had, and I had been in reach.
If I let myself think anything else, I would not be able to stay a year.
In the morning she went out to the heifers at first light.
I waited until her truck was at the far pasture, and I drove forty miles to the Silver Ridge office in Eau Claire.
I had decided that I was not going to be the man who stood in a kitchen being reasonable.
If there was a way out of this for her, I would find it myself, and I would hand it to her finished.
The office was a glass box on a business park road.
A woman at the front desk looked at my boots and my bandage and asked whom I wanted.
"The man who came to the Grange," I said. "He knows me."
He came out in his company vest and shook my hand.
He was younger than I had thought, tired around the eyes, and not unkind.
"Mr. Torkelson," he said. "The husband. I'd heard you were a drifter."
"Who told you that?"
"Mrs. Pruss, last month. She said the daughter was a spinster who would never marry." He rubbed his jaw. "She also said that if she did, it would be to somebody gone by the first frost."
"I've got a frost date in March."
