Chapter 10: The Truck
It rained all night, and in the morning I did not go to work.
I called in sick, which I had done twice in six years.
By noon I had changed my shirt four times and taken the ring off and put it back on.
At two o'clock I drove across town to Bull Street in the rain, without an umbrella and without a plan.
Romy's truck was parked at the curb outside the old shoe shop.
It was a green pickup with a cracked taillight and a sticker on the bumper that said I BRAKE FOR LIGHT.
She was standing beside it with her camera bag over one shoulder and her keys in her hand.
She was soaked.
Her bleached hair was plastered flat, and rain ran down the aperture on her forearm.
She saw me and went completely still.
"I was going to drive to Charleston," she said. "I got as far as the door."
"Why Charleston?"
"I had a vague idea of being somewhere you weren't."
"Romy."
"You left yesterday looking like someone had hit you. I thought, I did that, I'm the worst kind of person." She laughed without any humor. "I came out to the truck three times and went back up."
"I told Troy."
She stared at me.
"I told him everything," I said. "Last night. That I'm attracted to you, that I almost kissed you, that nothing else had happened. He took it better than I did, and I'm the one still shaking."
"He let you walk out the door."
"He's a good man."
"He's an incredible man," Romy said slowly. "Ivy, that's worse."
