Chapter 15: Daylight

I woke on Friday to daylight.

It came through the tall studio windows in long pale bars and lay across the floor, the couch, and the two of us.

Romy was asleep on her stomach with one arm flung over my waist.

Her face was turned toward me, and without the camera or the careful expression she looked soft and unguarded.

I lay still and looked at her.

I looked at the freckle under her left eye, the compass behind her ear, the white scar on her hip where the sheet had slipped.

It struck me that I could look at all of it now, in daylight, for as long as I wanted, and nobody would ask me to look at the lens.

Romy opened one eye.

"You're staring," she said into the pillow.

"I'm allowed."

"You're allowed." She smiled without opening the other eye. "Say it again."

"I'm allowed to look at you."

"Mm. Do it more."

I did.

I reached out and traced the tattoo on her forearm, the ring of the aperture blades, and she turned her hand over under my finger.

"It's from my first wedding," she said. "I shot it at nineteen, for a hundred dollars and a plate of ham. I went home and had it inked the next week."

"Why?"

"Because that day the bride's mother told me to wait for the light, and I liked being the one who waited."

"You're not waiting now."

"No," she said, and rolled onto her back, and pulled me over her.

The kiss was lazy, sweet, and tasted like sleep.
