Chapter 16: The Stalker Story
The morning program had a blue banner at the bottom of the screen.
Emi stood with her spatula in the air and watched herself on television.
It was a photo from the store camera, grainy and gray, her face lit by the cash register.
Under it ran the words: Stalker Sister Held Idol at Home.
The anchor sat at a pale desk and read from a card.
"Kitamura Entertainment issued a statement this morning," she said. "It says the agency's talent Kokone Arai was lured to the home of a stepsister, Emi Y., twenty-two, who has since refused all contact."
"It says Ms. Y. has an unhealthy fixation. The agency is considering legal action."
The seven girls on the futon had gone silent.
"He didn't," Kokone whispered.
"He did," said Rina.
"He's saying I took you."
"I came here on my own. Misaki brought me."
"He knows that."
"It's a lie that's easier to repeat than the truth," Emi said.
She turned off the stove.
She was surprisingly calm.
It was the calm of someone who had already been punched and had found it less awful than expected.
"I have a shift tonight," she said.
"No," said Kokone.
"Eleven to six."
"Emi, there'll be cameras. They'll be at the store, they'll be at your building."
"They are at my building."
Emi went to the window and looked down.
There were three vans on the street, and a knot of people with long lenses at the foot of the stairs.
A man in a green jacket looked up and pointed.
"If I don't go to work," Emi said, "they get a clean photo of the stalker hiding upstairs."
