Chapter 16: Bolivar
Nina's POV
The Bolivar ferry runs every twenty minutes, and the driver left me at the ramp as promised.
I stood on the car deck in a borrowed rain jacket with my sea-bag at my feet.
The Gulf came up gray and slow under the bow.
The storm watch had turned the whole bay the color of lead.
On the far shore the lighthouse stood black against the sky.
The road past it ran out into shell and sawgrass.
I walked the last two miles.
The camp was twelve cabins in a row and a bait shop with a hand-painted sign.
A radio in the shop was reading out wind speeds.
The last cabin had a screen door, and the screen had a hole in it patched with duct tape.
I stood on the step for a full minute before I knocked.
She opened the door on the chain.
She was thinner.
The long red braid had been hacked off at her jaw.
She had a bruise-colored smear under each eye and no makeup at all.
I had known that face for nineteen years.
Now I looked at it and saw a woman in a framed photograph, laughing at something off to the side.
"You came," said Priscilla.
"You texted," I said.
"I didn't think you would."
"Open the door," I said.
She shut it, and I heard the chain.
When it opened again she stepped back.
I walked into a one-room cabin that smelled of bug spray and canned soup.
There was a cot, a hot plate and a little table with two chairs.
On the table sat a brown envelope with a rubber band round it.
"Sit," she said.
"I'll stand."
"Nina."
