Chapter 19: The Eve of Lorna
By noon the whole dock was lashed down.
The shrimp boats had been hauled to the deep berths at the north end and chained bow and stern.
Their nets were stripped and their outriggers pinned.
Men ran up and down Pier 19 in yellow slickers with coils of rope over their shoulders.
The sky had gone from lead to a flat, low, greenish gray.
The wind had a weight in it that you could lean on.
I stood at the head of the dock in my rain jacket and watched Marcello's men carry my father out of the Scalise house.
They did it carefully, four of them, with the chair held level between them.
My father held his cap on with his good hand.
When they reached the car, he lifted his chin at me.
"I'm coming," I said. "I'll be right behind you."
He looked past me at the Mary Ignazia, riding hard at her chains at the third berth.
Then he turned his face away.
It was the first time I had ever seen him leave her.
I rode in the back of the car with him to the compound, with my hand over his on the blanket.
I told him the boat would be fine.
I did not know if it was true.
At the house, Agata had the long table dragged out of the dining room.
"Not in the house," she said, standing in the hall with her keys in her fist. "If we're going to feed this dock the night before the storm, we do it on the dock."
"Zia," said Marcello. "The wind."
"Under the roof of the fish shed. The old way." She stabbed a finger at him. "Your father did it the night before every storm for thirty years. He said a hungry captain makes a bad decision."
