Chapter 15: Torn Paper

I took the stairs to the bridal suite two at a time with Malcolm right behind me.

The door stood half open.

The bed was made and the lamp was on.

Brynn's white shoes lay on their sides by the wall.

On the carpet, crushed flat under a heel, lay the little pin from her collar.

"She didn't take it off," Malcolm said, low. "Somebody did."

I looked around the room.

A water glass sat on the dresser with a film of white powder dried in the bottom.

Brynn's phone lay face up on the pillow.

I picked it up and it lit in my hand.

There was one new message, to my number, sent a minute ago.

It was a short video clip.

Brynn sat slumped in the passenger seat of a moving car with her head against the window and her mouth open.

A man's hand moved her hair off her face.

Under it, the text said: Summer house by midnight. Alone. Bring your thirty percent signed over to me on paper. Malcolm stays in Boston. She's sleeping, and she would like to go on sleeping.

"That's him," I said.

"That's his hand."

"He was at the table until the toast."

"He's not at the table now."

We ran.

The ballroom was still full of music.

Shane's chair stood pushed back from the head table, and his napkin lay on the floor.

By the service door, his mother stood alone in her gray dress, looking at the empty chair.

She turned her head and found my face across eighty people.

She did not say anything.

She took her car keys out of her purse, and she went out through the kitchen.
