Chapter 13: The Microphone

"This week the Rongda Treehole reported that Tang Zhiyuan is hiding a shoulder injury," said Cen into the microphone.

Three hundred people stopped talking.

On the deck, Tang's stomach turned over.

"I'm not here to gossip," said Cen sadly. "But the team deserves honesty."

"Our physio has the answer, so I'd like to ask him directly. Doc Fu, how is the shoulder?"

Heads turned toward the front row.

Fu stood up with the green notebook in his hand and a single folded slip of paper.

He did not look at Tang.

"Thank you for the introduction, Mingyu," he said, pleasantly. "I'd like my three minutes now."

"Your three minutes?" said Cen.

"The professor's slot," said the captain from the side of the stage, with his arms folded. "It's on the programme."

Fu walked up the steps onto the stage.

Cen did not give up the microphone until the professor, in the front row, cleared his throat loudly.

Then he handed it over with a bright, rigid smile.

Fu held it a little away from his mouth.

"The Treehole is right about one thing," he said. "The MRI is real, and it is booked."

"I told exactly three people about it four weeks ago, in confidence, at lunch on October sixteenth."

"I also gave each of them a different day."

A murmur rippled through the seats.
