Chapter 15: The Pool Pays Out
"Nobody move," said Luo Bin again, wiping his nose on his sleeve. "This is a legal proceeding."
Tang had opened the door of the flat in a pair of borrowed track bottoms and his team jacket zipped to the chin.
Thirty swimmers sat and lay along the landing and down three flights of stairs in the cold grey light, and every one of them had clearly been there all night.
They obeyed Luo Bin, because he had the whiteboard.
Fu stood behind Tang's shoulder in a dressing gown, with his glasses back on.
He had not let go of the back of Tang's jacket.
"The pool is closed," said Luo Bin, and held up the whiteboard.
"Thirty-one entrants. Stakes from twenty to five hundred yuan. Prize pot, three thousand six hundred and forty."
"The question, for the record, was: when does Tang Zhiyuan say it first?"
"Say what?" said the other roommate, filming.
"Shut up. The winning columns are 'this semester' and 'before he graduates.'"
"The winners are Aunt Lin, five hundred yuan, entered three years ago, who is absent and crying in a restaurant, and has been since half past eleven last night."
