Chapter 18: The Diner
Nils's POV
On Monday I walked into the yard at seven and went up the stairs to my father's office.
He was at his desk with a coffee, and he did not look up.
I put my keys on the blotter.
There were five of them on a steel ring: the shop, the office, the safe, the boathouse and the truck.
He looked at them.
"What's this?" he said.
"I quit," I said.
"You're vice president."
"I'm not."
"You'll stand next to me on Saturday," he said.
His voice was reasonable.
"You'll stand where I put you. Or I'll make you look like what you are."
"What am I?" I said.
"A boy who fucked his sister in my house."
I did not hit him.
I understood that I did not need to.
"She's not my sister," I said. "She never was. You'll find out Saturday who I stand next to."
I walked down the stairs and past the paint shed.
The foreman with the taped nose looked at me, and for once he looked away.
On Friday I stood at the gate of the Duluth airport in the cold.
