Chapter 15: Inspection
Mac reached for the contract, and Bodie pulled it against his chest.
"Throw it out," she said.
"It's his," I said.
"It's Crown's. That's the whole point of it."
Bodie looked at me with frosting on his chin.
"Read all of it before you decide anything," I told him. "Every page. Then decide."
"You're not going to tell me no?"
"It's eight thousand dollars, Bodie. I'm not going to tell you anything."
He folded the contract in half and pushed it into the front pocket of his hoodie.
Nobody finished the cake.
On Sunday morning Moberly came to inspect his property.
He came up the front walk with a woman holding a clipboard and a man carrying a camera.
He didn't knock.
"Morning, Owls," he said, and walked into the living room like he was showing it to a buyer.
The woman measured the living room wall with a tape that beeped.
"The academy can fit eight desks in here," she said.
"Ten," Moberly said. "Lose the couch."
Bodie's pillow and blanket were still folded on the couch.
Moberly opened the fridge and looked at the Texan's cereal boxes stacked on the top shelf.
