Chapter 19: Blind

The press hall at the Long Beach arena had been set up.

There was a long table at the front with the commissioner in the middle of it.

She was in her fifties, with her reading glasses pushed up on her head and a yellow legal pad in front of her.

Three cameras were pointed at her, and the league's stream ran on a big screen behind her, its chat scrolling too fast to read.

Moberly sat at a small table on the left with a lawyer in a gray suit.

My old coach sat beside them, chewing.

Toni sat on the right in her blazer, alone, with her hands folded and the scar on top.

The Owls filled the back row of folding chairs, with the widow on the end, knitting.

Moberly went first, easy and warm, and he talked to the cameras more than to the commissioner.

His lawyer put a still frame from Toni's footage up on the screen.

It was the trophy wall in Crown's practice room.

In the glass of the trophy case, very faint, there was the reflection of a whiteboard covered in marker.

"Those are our new plays," Moberly said. "Installed August tenth. Joel was gone by the fifteenth."

The commissioner looked at the frame for a long time, then turned to my old coach.
