Chapter 20: Mac's Eyes
"He's not wrong," Toni said.
"No," I said. "He isn't."
"So what are you going to listen to on Saturday?"
"I don't know yet."
"Good," she said. "Then you'll have to think."
On Wednesday, Crown fired my old coach by press release.
It thanked him for thirteen years and didn't say why.
It said Crown's academy coach would run the team for the grand final.
Mac read it at the widow's kitchen table and laughed out loud, with no fun in it.
"Him," she said. "The one who kept thirty percent of our money."
"That's him."
"Good," she said. "Then I get to beat him too."
That night Bodie asked me how much grand final tickets cost.
"For my mom and my sister," he said. "If we get there."
"The team gets four seats."
"Can I have two?"
"You can have all four," the Texan said from the couch. "Yes sir."
On Saturday the lower final was in Long Beach, and Atlanta came out loud.
Their coach waved at me from across the stage with a pair of headphones held up beside his face.
The first round sounded like ten people instead of five.
Boots ran in every hallway, and shields clanked down at both vaults.
