Chapter 13: The Interview
I sat in the Camry with the key in my pocket and did not start it.
It was the first car I had ever owned that somebody else had fixed, and I couldn't make myself turn it on.
Orlin came out to the lot at dusk with his cane.
He looked at me through the glass and tapped it with one knuckle.
I rolled the window down.
"Take the Ranger," he said. "The Camry'll keep."
"I can't drive that car until I've paid for it."
"Then it'll keep a while," Orlin said, and put the loaner keys in my hand.
He didn't say anything else, and I was grateful.
I slept at my mother's house with the porch light on, because now I knew who was paying for it.
I lay awake and did arithmetic.
On Monday morning I drove the Ranger to Hillsboro.
The dental office was a low brick building next to a Dollar General.
A sign out front said NEW PATIENTS WELCOME in red plastic letters.
I had found their ad on my phone at six that morning and called when they opened at eight.
The dentist was sixty and wore a Tabor College mug on a lanyard, and he read my résumé twice.
