Chapter 22: The Claw-Foot
I said it back that same afternoon, on the office floor, with the invoices under my shoulder blades and the space heater ticking.
He put his face in my neck and didn't say anything for a long time.
By the third Saturday of November I had said it so often that it no longer scared me.
My mother's bathroom was the only room in the house I had not touched.
It was small and pink, with a black-and-white tile floor and a long cast-iron tub on four iron claws.
I had sat in it as a girl with a washcloth on my head while she scrubbed my knees.
That night I ran the water hot.
I lit nothing, because my mother had been afraid of candles.
I got in and slid down until the water came up to my chin.
I heard the front door and his boots in the hall.
"Carla?"
"In here."
He stood in the doorway in his work jeans and a gray thermal.
He had grease to the wrists and the shadow of a long day on his face.
He looked at the tub, and at me in it with my knees up, and at the small yellow light over the sink.
"Get in," I said.
"I'm filthy."
"I know. Get in."
He got undressed in the hall light, fast.
When he stepped over the rim the water jumped.
He lowered himself in behind me with a grunt, and his legs went down either side of mine.
The tub was a tight fit for two and built for one woman who had never liked company.
Water slopped over the side onto the tile.
"Your mother's going to haunt me," he said.
"She'd have liked you."
"You don't know that," he said.
"She'd have liked that you wipe your feet."
He laughed, low in his chest, and pulled me back against him.
