Breanne's hand tightened on the microphone.
"What checks?"
"Yours."
Jeb walked up to the edge of the stage with the binder open.
He didn't climb up. He didn't need to. He was tall enough to read to the back row from the floor.
"Hollow Fund college checks," he said. "Breanne Crabtree, freshman year. Full award, same as every kid."
"Endorsed in her own hand. Cashed at the bank in town."
He turned a page.
"Sophomore year. Full award. Endorsed. Cashed."
Another page.
"Junior year. Same."
"Senior year. Same."
He held the binder up and turned it around so the front rows could see four signatures in purple ink.
"Four checks," he said. "I wrote every one of them myself."
The hall was so quiet I could hear Granny's oxygen hiss.
Breanne's mama half stood behind her card table.
"Those are just numbers in a book he keeps."
"They're numbers in a book you keep the minutes for," Jeb said. "You signed off on all four."
Breanne's mama sat back down.
I found my voice.
"I never told you the fund ran short, Breanne."
