Chapter 24: Demo Day
"You're not going to Chicago without me," Jeb said.
It was eleven that night, on Granny's porch, with the community hall lights still on down the hollow.
"You've got a mill to run."
"I've got a foreman who's been dying to run it without me watching."
"And Granny?"
"My mama's moving in for three days. She already packed her skillet."
Granny called through the screen door.
"I can hear you both. Go on. I want to see that man on his knees again."
***
We drove up Wednesday in Jeb's truck, with Sheree's car in front of us all the way.
She lost her other hubcap outside Louisville and honked at it.
Jeb had never been to Chicago.
He didn't say so. He just went very quiet on the Dan Ryan, with eight lanes of traffic on every side of the truck.
"You okay?"
"Fine."
A semi passed us close enough to touch.
"There's more people on this road than in the county," he said.
"There's more people in my old building than in the county."
He looked at me sideways.
"And you lived here eight years on purpose."
