Chapter 9: The Roof
The roof of the officers' tower was flat gravel and cold stars.
Below us the Hudson valley lay black and silver under a half moon, and the academy's lights were small and far away.
Sebastian had spread an army blanket in the lee of the chimney.
He was waiting in his shirtsleeves, which was foolish, though the cold didn't bother him.
I wore my coat over my pajamas.
"You came," he said.
"You ordered me."
"I did."
"Then you're going to follow the next order too."
His eyebrow, the scarred one, rose.
"Is that so."
"Yes." My heart was hammering, but I had decided something on the stairs. "Take off your shirt."
He studied me for a long moment.
Then, very slowly, his mouth curved.
"Yes, ma'am."
He unbuttoned it.
He let it drop onto the gravel, and the moonlight ran over his chest.
He looked carved.
I took off my coat and let it fall.
I took off my pajama top, and the night air tightened my nipples at once.
His eyes dropped.
"Pants," I said.
He undid his belt.
"Slower."
He slowed.
I watched him undress for me in the moonlight, every button and every buckle.
By the end my mouth was dry and my knees were weak.
He stood naked in front of me, hard and heavy and pale.
I had never seen a man look so fine and so tired at once.
"Lie down."
"Ingrid."
"On the blanket. On your back."
He lay down.
I stripped off the rest of my clothes in the cold and knelt over him.
His hands rose to my hips.
I caught his wrists and pressed them down on either side of his head.
"No hands," I said.
"You're serious."
