Chapter 19: Clause Nine

At nine on Thursday morning, the seventh floor of the Sangam tower was full.

Every one of the sixty staff stood between the desks, because Yeo-reum had asked Hye-jin to call them all out of their chairs.

Soo-ah stood at her elbow in her two brown buns, holding a paper cup in both hands and not drinking from it.

Gong Tae-sik came out of the glass office with a leather folder under his arm and Dong-hwan one pace behind him.

His navy suit shone.

Jin-woo stood at the far end of the room, with Hye-jin on his left, and did not come forward.

He had signed a letter weeks ago that said this was not his to decide, and he kept it.

"I will be brief," Gong said, to the room. His smooth voice carried. "Ms. Oh is not above her contract. Clause Nine."

He opened the folder and held up a sheet of paper to the staff.

"Clause Nine says that any work in progress at the time of a sale of the platform is assigned to the platform. That includes chapter sixty of Blue Hour. It also includes the reveal of the face. Ryu Content owns it, not her."

There was a ripple in the room, and a few phones came out.

Yeo-reum took one step forward.

"May I see it?"

"Of course." Gong held it out between two fingers, with a smile.

She did not take it.

She went to the long worktable in the middle of the room, and set down her own sheaf of paper on it, and laid out three pages in a row.

"I'm going to read Clause Nine," she said. "Out loud, so nobody has to take my word."

Her voice came out steady.

"Nine point one. Work in progress at the time of a sale is assigned to the platform. But, nine point two. An assignment of any unpublished chapter takes effect only if the creator signs the transfer form in ink, and the platform serves thirty days' written notice."
