Chapter 13: Say You Chose Me
I turned the phone around and held it in front of his face.
Auden read the photograph for a long second.
He didn't reach for the phone.
He didn't say it wasn't true.
"Is it real?" I asked.
"It's real."
"Eight weeks ago."
"Yes."
I put the phone on the nightstand.
My hands were steady, which surprised me.
Whatever came next was going to come from somewhere cold and clear inside me, the same place I'd stood in a restaurant with a ring in my fist.
"Get on your back," I said.
He looked at me.
"Lenora."
"Get on your back, Auden. Hands over your head."
He lay back on the white sheets.
He raised his arms.
I took the sash from the robe on the chair and bound his wrists to the iron bed frame, two turns, a tight knot.
He let me.
That was the part that undid me, how easily he let me.
"Tell me everything," I said, "and I'll decide what to do with you."
He drew a breath.
"Davis came to my bank last spring for a loan."
"Go on."
"His collateral was a wharf he said he'd inherit through his wife."
"His wife."
"You."
I straddled his hips.
He was already hard against my thigh, which made me furious and wet in equal parts.
"Go on."
"I had my people check the claim. They found a marriage record that didn't exist. They found a second marriage that did." His eyes stayed on mine. "I could have called the loan then and seized nothing, because nothing was his."
