Chapter 20: The Reading

The trustee's lawyer read my grandmother's words in a voice that carried to the back of the old cotton exchange hall.

"To my granddaughter Lenora Calhoun, on her thirtieth birthday, I leave Calhoun Wharf, the house on Jones Street, and every account that carries our name."

The room made a long sound, half sigh and half applause.

My great-grandmother's portrait watched from the wall.

I stood at the front in my blue gown with Auden half a step behind me, and my knees did not shake.

"Ms. Calhoun," the lawyer said. "Will you accept?"

"I will."

"Then the trust is dissolved, and everything is yours."

Davis was on his feet before the applause had finished.

He wore a gray suit and his best smile.

He walked down the center aisle with a folder held up in one hand, calling to the room.

"Friends, if I may. As Lenora's husband I've held her power of attorney for these past two weeks, and I'd like to put it on the record."

He laid the folder in front of the lawyer.

"She's had a hard month. I'll handle the paperwork."

"You are Ms. Calhoun's husband?" the lawyer said.

"Davis Foster. Married three years."

I stepped forward.

"No," I said.
