Chapter 9: The Van

Maura listened to the voicemail twice with the phone against her chest.

"Say it," I said.

"He says he's sorry." She put the phone down on the quilt. "He says Mr. Teller has an outside doctor and a van, and they're coming for you, and he had to give them my address."

"He had to."

"That's what he says."

"What time did he leave it?"

"Ten past five."

I was already reaching for my trousers.

"They'll be here any minute," Maura said. "Put on a shirt."

"I'm putting on a shirt."

"That's a sweatshirt of mine."

"It's the shirt I have."

It said DAYTON CHILI COOK-OFF 5K across the front and was a size too small.

She laughed in spite of everything, and then she took my wrist and held it.

"You are not going back," she said.

"I know."

"I mean I will lie down in the road."

"You'd have to move your car first."

Her mouth twitched.

Downstairs, the laundromat had just opened.

Two women were loading washers, a man in a Browns jacket was feeding quarters into a dryer, and the owner was counting a drawer behind the counter.

A white van pulled up at the curb outside.

It had no name on it.

Four people got out.

Two were big men in matching gray polo shirts, one was a thin man with a leather medical bag, and the fourth was a lawyer in a camel coat who had been at the closing the day before.

The lawyer held a folder over his head against the drizzle.

I came down the outside stairs and stood on the landing.

"Mr. Ostrow," the lawyer called. "Damon Ostrow?"

"Yes."

"I'm here on behalf of Mr. Brooks Teller, who is deeply concerned for your welfare."

"I bet," I said.

"We have an emergency petition for an immediate evaluation. Our physician has examined the paperwork, and the transport team is here to take you somewhere safe."
