Chapter 15: Phones Up
Laney walked up the steps with her phone held out in front of her.
"Last April," she said into my microphone, "Rhett asked me to be in a bit."
Her voice shook, but she didn't stop.
"He said it was a baking challenge for the channel."
"He walked me into the dining hall freezer to pick out the butter."
"Then he shut the door."
Somebody groaned.
"I banged on it for ten minutes."
"I had my phone in my apron, and I recorded the whole thing, because I didn't know what else to do."
She looked at the sound man at the side of the stage.
"Can you plug me in?"
He looked at Dax.
Dax didn't say anything, and the sound man took the cable out of Laney's hand and plugged it into the board.
The big screen filled with a dark metal door, shot from inside.
My best friend's voice was screaming through it, thin and high.
"Rhett! Rhett, open it, I can't feel my hands!"
