Chapter 17: In Person
It took us two hours to get out of the commons.
People wanted to shake Clark's hand, and Laney's, and mine, and a girl I had never met cried on my shoulder for a full minute.
By the time we reached Birch Street it was dark.
Laney took one look at our faces, said she was sleeping at the bakery, and left a plate of lemon muffins on the stairs.
I turned on every light in my room.
The overhead, the desk lamp, the string of white bulbs over the bed.
Clark stood in the doorway and watched me do it.
"You said in person," I said.
"I did."
"Then come in and shut the door."
He shut it.
I stood in the middle of the carpet in my sweatshirt, with my own voice, my plain voice, the one I used to order coffee.
I didn't whisper.
"I love you," I said.
He didn't move.
"I love you, Clark Ellery."
"I love your stupid coat and your terrible coffee, and the way you say my name like it's a decision."
"I loved you before I saw you, and I love you more now that I have."
His eyes had gone bright and hard.
"Again."
"I love you."
"Once more."
"I love you, and I'm not going to say it in the dark ever again, because I don't have to."
