Chapter 22: Eve
By Friday night, the house on Birch Street was the quietest it had been all month.
Rhett was in Clark's suite across town, with a guard outside the door and Clark's promise that he would be watched.
Laney had gone to bed at ten with her phone off.
She had told us both that if she heard anything through the ceiling, she would turn up the radio and pretend we were ghosts.
It was ten to midnight, and Clark and I were in the kitchen in socks.
"There's a cake in this house," I said.
"There is."
"Laney's been baking for homecoming for three days. She told me she hid the big one so I wouldn't touch it."
"And?"
"And I want to see it."
Clark leaned on the counter and looked at me over the rim of a mug of terrible tea.
"You're asking me to use my eyes to find a dessert."
"I'm asking you to use your eyes to find a dessert," I said. "It's the most noble use of them yet."
"I have helped expose a corporate villain."
"I'm hungry."
He closed one eye, which he didn't need to do, and turned slowly in a circle.
"Oven," he said.
I opened the oven.
Inside, on a wire rack, sat a three-tier lemon cake with white buttercream and a tiny sugar banner that read GO LIONS.
