Chapter 7: Look

The house was dark, and Laney's note on the fridge said she was at the bakery until midnight.

I didn't turn on a light.

I pulled Clark up the stairs by his shirt, and he came without a word, his hand tight around mine.

My bedroom door banged against the wall.

He closed it behind us and stood with his back against it, breathing hard.

"Cecelia," he said.

"Look at me."

"I am."

"Not my face."

I took off his coat, which I was still wearing, and let it fall on the floor.

Then I pulled my sweatshirt over my head.

The room was dim, with only the streetlight coming through the blinds.

I stood in front of him in my jeans and my plain white bra, with my heart slamming.

Nobody had ever watched me undress like that.

I was eighteen, he was twenty-five, and neither of us was confused about what we wanted.

He didn't move for a long moment.

Then his eyes went down.

I watched them do it.

They went from my face to my throat and my shoulders.

Then they moved to the swell of my breasts in the cotton, and every inch they touched felt like a hand.

His chest rose and fell once, unevenly.

"God," he said, hoarse.

"You're the first," he said. "I've seen a thousand bodies without meaning to. Every one of them felt like trespassing. I've never looked at anyone on purpose."

His voice cracked on the last word.

"And?"

"And I've never wanted anything so much in my life."

I laughed, a shaky breath, and unhooked my bra and let it fall.

He made a sound low in his throat.

"Come here," he said.

I crossed the room.

He caught my waist and turned us, pressing me against the door, and his mouth came down on mine, hard.

His tongue slid into my mouth, and I clutched his shirt and kissed him back with everything I had.

Six months of nights, I thought.

I would never say it out loud, but my body knew exactly who he was.

His hands covered my breasts, and his thumbs dragged across my nipples until I gasped into his mouth.

"Tell me," he said against my lips.

"Good."

"More."

"Like I'll die if you stop."

"Good girl."

Heat shot straight down between my legs.
