Chapter 13: On Her Knees
Nero crossed the swept floor, and every board creaked under him.
The sound carried to the walls.
He stopped one step from my chair and looked down at me.
His eyes were red at the rims, and ash still stained his palm.
Thirty men watched, and the candles leaned in the draft.
"Say it," Aldo said softly from behind him.
Nero didn't open his mouth.
"On her knees, my son. That is the whole of it."
"She doesn't kneel," Nero said.
His voice was low and rough, and it reached the back wall.
"Not for you, Papa, and not for me."
"Then she will be put out standing, and you will have failed."
I stood up.
My silk skirt whispered against my legs, and my heart was going so hard I felt it in my teeth.
"Nobody puts me out," I said.
Nobody in the hall moved.
I turned my head and looked straight at the white-haired man under the painting of the saint.
