Chapter 19: The Vote
The back hall at Bellandi's was lit by a single row of candles, and the swept floor was bare.
Nine captains sat in nine carved chairs along the wall.
At the end of the row stood a tenth chair under the painting of the saint, and it was empty.
Sal stood in front of it with his hands folded.
I sat in the first row, seat four, in the same black dress, because it was the only place in the hall where a woman could sit.
Nero stood alone on the swept floor, in his flour-stained shirt and no coat.
"The Table is called," Sal said.
His voice filled the room without effort.
"Seven days ago this man took the oath and failed the last act."
A low murmur ran down the row.
"By our law, a man who fails the last act is not made. I move that Nero Bellandi be struck from the family and his oath burned for nothing. Let the Table vote."
"One minute first," I said.
My voice rang off the walls.
