Chapter 27: The Jar

I stood in the gravel with the phone against my ear and the lake going pink behind the trailers.

Elio was watching my face.

"He ran," I said.

Elio didn't swear.

He just took out his own phone.

"No," I said. "Let them find him."

"Viola."

"Let them. Please. One more time."

He put the phone back in his pocket.

The call came at 6:10 that morning, while I was sitting on Nonna's kitchen floor sweeping up rosary beads.

It was a number I didn't know.

"Dr. Cerrato." The voice was rough and tired. "It's his partner. From the stairwell."

I sat up.

"I've got him," he said. "Hopkins Airport. Gate B9. Ball cap, no bags, a ticket to Miami under a name that isn't his."

Behind him, somebody was shouting.

I knew that voice.

It was yelling that this was a mistake, that he was a cop, that they all knew him.

"How did you know where he'd be?" I asked.

"Two years in a car with him. I know how he stands in a line." The partner paused. "I wanted you to hear it from a cop. Since the last one lied to you."
