Chapter 28: Verdict
We went back in and sat down.
Nobody on our bench touched anybody else.
Nonna had her rosary wound so tight around her fingers they'd gone white.
Trent came in through the side door between two marshals.
He was in the navy suit from the annulment, and he'd cut himself shaving.
His mother was in the front row behind him.
His father had come back.
He wasn't sitting with her.
He stood in the very last row by the door, in his gray suit, like a man who might have to leave again.
The jury filed in.
None of them looked at Trent.
I'd sat with enough owners in enough exam rooms to know what that meant.
The judge asked the foreman to stand.
He was an older man in a cardigan who looked like he'd rather be anywhere else.
"On count one, attempted murder for hire, we find the defendant guilty."
Trent's mother made a sound.
"On count two, discharging a firearm in a crime of violence, guilty."
