Chapter 15: Rain
Nobody at the table breathed.
"You deleted it," Declan said.
"I protected this family."
"You watched my son fall down eleven stairs, and you protected this family."
"I watched a child get hurt by a woman who was already grieving," Constance said. "And I saw what would happen if that clip ever left the house."
"What would happen?"
"Exactly this." She spread one hand over the table, over the staring faces and the tablet. "Scandal. Your father's name in the papers. The Foundation gone."
"You let them say Kira did it."
"Kira was not one of us."
The room went very still.
Even the man with the napkin at his collar looked at his plate.
"And then they arrested me," Declan said. "You knew where the clip was. You knew I was in a cell for her murder."
"I did not know you would be held so long."
"I was held fourteen months."
"I had the best lawyer in the state working for you."
"You hired the same man who sat next to you at my arraignment, Mother, and told me not to mention a camera."
She did not answer.
I saw her swallow.
For the first time since I had known her, Constance Sayer looked old.
"You could have set me free in one afternoon," Declan said. "You had it in your hand."
Margo stood.
"Declan, honey, this is exactly what I was afraid of," she said, her voice low and wet. "You're not well. You've been under such strain since the arrest. Sit down, let's talk about it."
"Sit down, Margo."
It was the first time I had heard him use that voice on her.
