Chapter 28: Line of Duty
The general tore the back off his program and folded it into his breast pocket.
"You'll hear from me, ma'am," he said to Mama. "Not from a staff officer. From me."
Then he went and stood at the wall with his cover off.
The paper ran it the next morning, above the fold.
"MARINE MAJOR WALKED OFF MEMORIAL DEDICATION IN COVER-UP PROBE."
Mama cut it out with her sewing scissors and stuck it on the refrigerator next to the yard's tide chart.
"Last time it was my daughter up there," she said. "I like this one better."
The general called on the second Thursday in June.
He called the kitchen phone, the old one on the wall, because that was the number on Jesse's file.
Mama answered it in her apron.
She listened for a long time.
She said "Yes, sir" twice.
Then she said, "Would you say that again, please, so my daughter can hear it."
She held the receiver out to me.
The general's voice was rough and slow.
"Mrs. Pickard. The original determination in your brother's case has been set aside. Lance Corporal Gwaltney died in the line of duty. Not due to his own misconduct."
