Chapter 19: Hal's Office
It took Calder's lawyers sixteen days to finish the paper.
On the Wednesday it was done, the chair of the board met us at the elevator on the top floor of the Philadelphia building.
She wore the railroad pin and carried one brass key.
"I voted against pushing him out," she said to Reed, without hello. "I lost eleven to one."
Reed said nothing.
"They were afraid of what he'd do with the yards. He'd have done exactly what Ms. Brandvold did in my boardroom."
"I kept his door locked for nine years," she said. "I told the board it was for the insurance. It wasn't."
She fitted the key into a door at the end of the corridor.
It opened on a room that smelled of pipe smoke and old paper.
Reed stopped at the threshold.
I put my hand flat on his back.
It was a big corner office with a walnut desk.
The window looked straight down on the yard, a hundred tracks laid out.
On the desk were a pair of reading glasses and a brass paperweight shaped like a locomotive.
A framed photograph sat beside them.
I leaned closer.
It was a small boy of nine in a man's cap, grinning from the window of a freight engine.
