Chapter 15: Gallowmere
Gallowmere sat on the edge of the Blight like a black tooth.
The sleigh slid to a stop two hundred paces from the gate, in snow that crunched with frost.
Linnea climbed out with her palm bound in a strip of Torvald's apron.
Beyond the keep wall, the white wall of the Blight stood waiting, so close she could hear it creak.
"Report," she said.
Corvin dropped out of the dark in his man's shape, feathers still settling on his shoulders.
"Two towers, one gate, forty guards on the walls," he said. "Bracken's black cloaks."
"The children are in the cellar under the great hall. I saw the light through the grate."
"Light?"
"Gold. From their wrists." His mouth went tight. "It's getting weaker."
Marek made a sound in his throat.
All nine men had their left sleeves shoved up.
The red lines on their wrists pulsed slower than they had in Emberhall.
"Odell," said Linnea. "The gate."
Odell pushed back his hood.
He had changed at the stables into the muddy leathers of a river courier.
The Chancellor's swan was pinned on his shoulder.
