Chapter 16: Sabeth Breaks
Nobody in the cellar breathed.
Marek had one foot on the stair, and the muscle in his jaw was jumping.
"Stay where you are," said Linnea, without turning her head.
"She has a knife on a child," Marek ground out.
"I know what she has. Stay."
Sabeth backed through the servants' door with the little girl hanging from her arm.
"Upstairs," she said. "All of you. Slowly, hands where I can see them."
They climbed into the courtyard, and the night air hit them.
The garrison had come awake.
Thirty black-cloaked men stood around the courtyard with crossbows, and every bolt pointed at the Nine.
Behind them the Blight stood over the wall, white and glittering and very close.
Sabeth stopped in the torchlight with the knife under the child's chin.
The little girl was hardly crying.
She was too weak for that, and her lips were the color of slate.
"My father's writ," said Sabeth, and she drew a folded paper from her cloak with her free hand. "Sign it, ferry girl."
"The regency, in your own blood, if you can spare it. Then the little brat goes back in her cage."
