Chapter 20: The Nine Stand
The great doors of Ember Hall were oak and iron, and they were barred from inside.
Torvald hit them once with his shoulder, in the middle of a shift, and the bar split.
The doors swung open on a Hall full of torches.
Twenty of Bracken's black-cloaked guards stood in a half ring around the grey Stone.
In front of them stood a tall priest in a dead-white robe, holding a hammer.
The hammer was black iron, as long as a man, with a head the size of a cauldron.
Bracken stood at the priest's elbow with his burned hand wrapped in linen, and he turned with a pleasant, awful smile.
"Majesty," he said. "I wished you to see it done."
"The Cold is older than the Stone," said the priest in a dry, flat voice. "It was here first, and it will be here after."
He lifted the hammer.
"Stop," said Linnea.
She ran down the Hall, and the Nine ran with her.
They did not draw a sword between them.
They reached the Stone at the same time as the priest's first swing, and what they did was simple.
