Chapter 19: Disclosure
The chair's office had a plain desk, a window onto the courtyard and a kettle.
She shut the door and read Tate's complaint standing up.
Then she set it face down on the blotter.
"Sit," she said. "I have already read the video. Now I would like to hear it from you, in order, with dates."
Mikkel looked at me.
"You first," I said. "I'll fill in what you leave out."
He told her.
He told her he had been at the university since September and had been asked by Doc to look for a student on a road.
He told her about the car, the overpass, the ER, the witness statement he wrote, and the Wednesday night in the lab.
He told her about the file, and he did not leave out the eight days he had kept it from me.
I watched him say that part to her without lowering his eyes.
"I decided for her," he said. "I will not do it again. I am telling you this because it is the thing I did wrong, and I do not want you to hear it from the American."
The chair poured tea into three cups.
"When did the kiss happen?" she asked.
"Thursday, November twentieth," I said. "At one in the morning, in his lab. I had accepted your offer the Friday before. I had never taken a class from him or been graded by him, and he isn't on my program."
"He is not on any committee that could judge you."
"No."
"Dr. Dahl, do you hold any role in the admissions or the assessment of a student in this cohort?"
"None," Mikkel said. "My work is with the field-equipment group, and I will sign a recusal for any committee that includes her."
The chair took off her glasses and looked at us for a moment.
"This complaint says that you hid a relationship from the Institute," she said. "You walked into my office and told me yourselves, before I had to ask."
