Chapter 13: Not a Word
"Say that again," I said.
"I remember the roof."
The wind pulled at my dress, and I held onto my own elbows so my hands would stay still.
"You were on the bench in that courtroom for three days," I said. "I looked at the back of your head the whole time."
"I know."
"You could have turned around."
"Yes," Kenneth said. "I could have."
I laughed, and it came out wrong.
"Two weeks ago I told you I was yours."
"Yes."
"You knew exactly who you were holding."
"Yes."
"You sat in my mother's kitchen and let her feed you."
"Yes."
He answered every one of them with the same quiet word, and he did not look away.
I wanted him to argue.
I wanted him to say it was complicated, so I could hate that too.
"Why didn't you tell me in the first hour?" I said. "In the stairwell. At your desk. Anywhere."
"Because I thought you would walk out," he said. "I wanted to earn the right to say it first."
"So you decided what I could stand to know."
His mouth closed.
"You picked the night," I said. "You picked the dress, and the roof, and the sunset."
