Chapter 22: Ray's Kitchen
My father answered the door on Sunday with his arms folded.
"Mr. Lundberg," said Kenneth.
He stood on the porch in a plain grey sweater, with his right arm in a sling and a pie box in his good hand.
"What's that?" said my father.
"A pie. From the bakery on Taylor Street."
"You don't have to bribe me, son."
"It isn't a bribe. Your wife told me to bring a pie."
"Did she."
"Twice."
My father let out a short breath through his nose, which was as close to laughing as he was going to come.
"Get in here," he said.
The kitchen smelled like roast chicken and onions.
The radio on the counter was playing a ball game, and it was crackling so badly that the announcer sounded like he was talking through a fan.
"It's been dying since July," said my mother. "Ray won't let me buy a new one."
"I'm fixing it."
"You've been fixing it since July."
"I'm waiting for the right moment."
