Chapter 7: The Floor

By Monday, my father was home on the couch with a bowl of soup and a tube of bruise cream.

"I feel twenty," he said.

"You look sixty," said my mother, and kissed his forehead.

I went back to work with my chin up and my stomach in a knot.

The 31st floor went quiet when I walked in.

Someone had left a printout of Delaney's post on my keyboard.

Someone had drawn a red circle around my face.

I put the printout in the trash and sat down.

Nobody said good morning.

Nobody said anything for two hours.

At eleven, an email went out to the whole floor.

"All-hands in the big conference room, 11:30. Attendance required. G.A."

G.A. was Carson Ashworth.

I took my coffee and walked in with the rest of them.

The conference room had a wall screen at one end and a long table.

Carson stood at the head of it in a pale blue shirt with his gold watch showing.

I knew his face now.

It was boyish and open and very nice to look at, and I hated it a little.

Delaney sat beside him in a wheelchair.

She had a blanket over her knees and a hand on her stomach.

Her eyes were red-rimmed.

A murmur ran around the room.

"Thank you all for coming," Carson said warmly. "Delaney has asked to come in today. She's been through a terrible ordeal. I want everyone to know she's safe and supported, and that this company does not tolerate violence."
