Chapter 22: The Waiting Room

Ainsley's POV:

Savannah was on the kitchen floor when we got there, with her back against the cabinet and both hands on her stomach.

She had called nobody but me.

There was blood on her gray leggings, not much, and her face was the color of paper.

"I'm sorry," she kept saying. "I'm sorry, Ains, I'm sorry."

"Don't talk."

"I didn't want to call you."

"I know. Be quiet."

Elliot knelt beside her without a word and slid one arm under her knees and the other behind her back.

He lifted her.

I grabbed her coat and her bag, and we went down three flights of iron stairs at a run.

He drove with one hand and held the other out the window to wave down traffic at every red light.

In the back seat, I held Savannah's head in my lap.

"Is it moving?" I said.

"I can't tell."

"Talk to it."

"What?"

"Tell it we're almost there."

She started to cry, and then she did it.

"Almost there," she whispered. "Almost, baby, almost."

We got her inside at ten past eleven.

They took her through the double doors, and a nurse with kind eyes put a hand on my arm and told me to wait.

So I waited.

The waiting room had green plastic chairs and a television bolted to the ceiling, tuned to a game show with the sound off.

Elliot brought me coffee in a paper cup.

I held it without drinking.

He sat down beside me and did not say anything, and I was grateful.

Around one in the morning, a doctor came out.

She was a small tired woman in blue scrubs, and she did not make us wait for the sentence.

"The heartbeat is strong," she said. "The bleeding is from the placenta, low-lying, and it's common. She'll stay two nights. After that, bed rest until the baby's due."
