Chapter 16: Day Twenty-Six

Dylan's POV

On the twenty-sixth day I broke the only rule she had left me.

I had been sleeping in my father's guest room since the night of the party.

I was good at the rule for twenty-five days.

I stood on the showroom floor from eight to six and answered every question anyone asked me, and I went to bed at nine.

Then on Saturday night Beth's text came to my father's phone, because I was not allowed to have hers.

It said: Hannah is at the house tonight getting her flat files out of the studio. Stay away.

I read it standing at the kitchen counter.

At the house, in the garage, behind the snow tires, was a box I had never mentioned to anyone.

It was the crib.

We had bought it in February, at nineteen weeks, and the store had delivered it flat in its carton.

I had signed for it and told the men to put it in the garage until Hannah was ready to decide on a room.

After March I had walked around that carton for twenty months.

I couldn't open it, and I couldn't throw it away.

I wasn't going to give it to her, and I wasn't going to keep it from her, and I found I could not stand to be the only person who knew where it was.

So I drove across town at ten o'clock at night.

The studio light was on, and Jonas's truck was parked at the curb with its lamps off.

I should have turned around.

I let myself in through the garage with my key, and I dragged that box out from behind the tires and carried it up the back stairs.
